Research Components

Nigeria: Quality checks of LLINs for maintaining their efficacy under IR-context

Objectives

To evaluate bio-efficacy and insecticide residues in LLINs to inform policy.

Methodology

Due to growing pyrethroid resistance in Nigeria, there is a need for the National Malaria Elimination Program (NMEP) and partners to test insecticide resistance, bioefficacy and effectiveness of LLINs before distribution to the population. The following analyses will be conducted on the nets:

  • Bio-efficacy tests

  • Determination of chemical (insecticides) content of nets

Implementation

Long lasting insecticide nets will be purchased from available retailers and a set of questionnaires administered to the salesperson to ascertain sources of the nets.

A second questionnaire will be administered to randomly selected individual members of the community with LLINs to elicit information on knowledge, attitude, perception and practice of LLIN use.

Bioassay and chemical tests will be conducted on the LLINs collected to determine the level of their efficacy prior to field use.
