The research sites
The pilot study was carried out in semi-rural village in Chachoengsao Province in eastern Thailand.
The next phase of the research is planned to take place in an urban setting – a disease-endemic location from where it is easy for diseases to spread globally.
The selection of these release sites is based on the following criteria:
- at least one vector-borne disease (possibly dengue) is endemic to the location;
- popularity of international travel to the location;
- existing strong cooperation from the local government and local communities;
- the area is manageable in size and partly isolated geographically.
The study aims to include 2,500 households divided between 10 treatment clusters where sterile mosquitoes are planned to be released, and 10 control clusters that will not receive any intervention.
