What are Vector-Borne Diseases?

Vectors are organisms that transmit pathogens and parasites from one infected person (or animal) to another, causing serious diseases in human populations. These diseases are commonly found in tropical and sub-tropical regions and areas where access to safe drinking water and sanitation systems is problematic.

The vector-borne diseases that are examined in this programme include trypanosomiasis, schistosomiasis (bilharzia), malaria and Rift Valley fever.

VECTOR FRAMEWORKS

Vector-borne diseases can be studied within a framework of local, social and ecological systems.

These include:

  • Climate variability
  • Environmental conditions
  • Socioeconomic change

These local determinants are influenced by global and regional forces, such as climate change, poverty, globalisation, national and regional development efforts and policies.
