This objective involves the parasitology component of the study
The main outcome of this parasitology component is to determine estimates of the proportion of T. brucei infections in livestock which are T. b. rhodesiense, the form that can infect humans.
The methodology involves taking blood samples from livestock and analysing this to collect data on T. brucei infections. Sampling is carried out in Zimbabwe on cattle from government-owned test herds, along a transect at the border of farming and wilderness areas. The parasitology component will generate new knowledge about the level of cattle infected with trypanosome parasites in the test sites in Zimbabwe that are a threat to humans. A secondary outcome of this objective is thus to increase awareness among local communities of levels of infection in their vicinity.
